Motorola has officially confirmed that the Android 4.4 KitKat update has started to roll out over the air (OTA) to the Verizon Moto X.
While Verizon usually takes quite a long time to roll out updates, this time the Android 4.4 KitKat firmware is rolling out to Verizon's version of the Moto X first. Motorola highlighted that the upgrade is rolling out gradually, which means that it may take a while to reach all devices.
"We see our job as taking the world's best mobile operating system from Google and building world-class products and experiences for our users. Continually making them better is just as important. So what could be sweeter than Android 4.4, KitKat, rolling out in phases to Moto X on Verizon Wireless starting today!" Motorola boasted in a blog post on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
"Our software team has been hard at work bringing the latest version of Android to our Moto X users more quickly than ever. When it came to KitKat, we couldn't wait to deliver. Our software strategy is to build on a pure Android foundation and complement existing Google services, not compete with them. We think the latest release is just that - all the features you love about your Moto X with the latest Android OS."
The upgrade will bring all of the neat goodies that Android 4.4 KitKat has to offer, as well as a number of Moto X-specific changes such as touchless control enhancements and others. Here's a full changelog of the update, according to Motorola:
- An improved phone dialer now allows users to search for contacts directly from the dial-pad, while also providing easy access to the most frequently used contacts;
- More gallery goodies are now available as well, as KitKat brings some neat gallery effects such as Posterize, Highlights, and Edges. Users will also be able to annotate photos freehand with a finger via the Draw feature;
- The New Hangouts app now stores all conversations - texts, video calls, and other chats - in one place, bundling them together in a single app. Users are now also able to send animated GIFs and share their location;
- Color emojis now come with the Google Keyboard, allowing users to include colorful emoticons in text messages and other chats;
- The updated camera app now puts more power in users' hands, allowing them to drag to focus and expose. Simply put, all you need to do is drag your finger to set the right focus point and exposure;
- Other changes include restyled status and navigation bars, a new full-screen mode, as well as the aforementioned enhancements to Motorola features such as Touchless Control.
Verizon Wireless is currently the only carrier to officially start rolling out Android 4.4 KitKat, but Motorola promised to provide more details soon about the Moto X update to other carriers and countries.
