LG has recently announced its G Flex curved display smartphone and now the company has shown off the handset's self-healing capabilities.
Smartphones with curved displays seem to be a very hot trend nowadays, with both Samsung and LG boasting their latest flexible creations. Samsung may have beat LG to the punch by launching its Galaxy Round curved display smartphone first, but LG seems to have an ace up its sleeve.
If the LG G Flex's curved display was not enough to impress everyone, LG has also added a very neat feature: the smartphone's back case has self-healing powers. As expected, this self-healing process would not magically bring the phone back to life if you smash it with a hammer, but it will fix those tiny little scratches that inevitably occur with daily use.
Using your smartphone day in and day out, keeping it in a pocket next to a bunch of change, in a purse with keys next to it, or other such instances will automatically leave a mark on your device in time, but not with the LG G Flex.
LG has now posted a video on its Korean YouTube channel, showing off the phone's capabilities so everyone can see the self-healing tech in action. The video shows how the LG G Flex is continually scratched, only to heal itself within just a few minutes. The phone even heals itself after being repeatedly scratched in the exact same place.
The description on YouTube points out that this self-healing process will fix only light scratches that occur normally with everyday use. The phone may not recover from drops or deeper scratches. The company has yet to explain just how the G Flex's self-healing process works, but it's intriguing nonetheless.
Various current technologies can be employed to create a self-healing material, and using it for high-end smartphones and tablets seems like a terrific idea. Top-end devices usually come with a price to match, but a higher price tag may be worth it for many if they knew it would translate into durability and self-healing gadgets.
As LG has already taken the first step toward this endeavor with its self-healing LG G Flex, more device manufacturers may join the party in the future and create their own self-healing smartphones and tablets. For now, however, check out these capabilities on the LG G Flex in the video below.
