The Samsung Galaxy Round smartphone with a curved display has become available for purchase unlocked in the U.S., but it has a monstrous price tag.

Samsung's home country of South Korea recently saw a limited launch of the Galaxy Round, but the company didn't announce any official plans for global availability. It seemed rather unlikely that the much-touted flexible display smartphone from Samsung would become available elsewhere, but an online U.S. retailer has started offering the unlocked Galaxy Round.

While this may seem as good news, most people will likely be shocked to see the insane price tag. U.S. retailer Negri Electronics lists the Samsung Galaxy Round as available unlocked for a whopping $1,129.50. As insane as that price tag may seem, the device is apparently on backorder already.

The Samsung Galaxy Round made its debut as the first smartphone to boast a curved display. It packs high-end specs and features and is in many ways similar to the Galaxy Note 3, but without the S Pen stylus. The handset sports a 5.7-inch full HD Super AMOLED display and packs a quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz, paired with 3GB of RAM. Other specs include a 13-megapixel rear camera, a powerful 2,800 mAh battery and Android 4.3, the latest version of Jelly Bean.

"With this pioneering curved display technology, GALAXY ROUND blends the latest smartphone screen innovations with unique design features," touted Samsung upon announcing the smartphone. "The sleek and thin GALAXY ROUND which equipped with a 5.7" Full HD Super AMOLED with 7.9mm thick and weighs 154g offers a comfortable hand grip feeling to user, and exclusive experiences of curved display."

LG, meanwhile, has its own flexible display smartphone, the LG G Flex. LG's offering will launch in South Korea, as well as the U.S., Europe, and China. The company has yet to announce any pricing details for the LG G Flex, so it's difficult to tell at this point whether it will be cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Round.

Unlocked devices typically come with spicy price tags, but $1,129.50 may be a bit too much even for the most extravagant tech enthusiasts.
