Sony's current flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z1, will reportedly get the newly-announced Android 4.4 KitKat as soon as November.

Google has recently unveiled that the next version of its widely popular operating system will be Android 4.4 KitKat, not Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie as previously speculated. The company did not, however, offer any launch timeframe for the next Android OS.

The general belief is that Android 4.4 KitKat will make its debut alongside the much-rumored Google Nexus 5 sometime this month and it now seems that the Sony Xperia Z1 will get the tasty KitKat treat in November.

The news comes from AndroidSaS, which claims that Sony is currently working on its update platform and will roll out Android 4.4 updates in November. The Xperia Z1 will reportedly be the first to get it on Nov. 7, after which Sony will roll out the update to its other smartphones. The publication mentions that the Xperia Z and Xperia Z Ultra may get the KitKat treatment as well.

"According to the sources, the Android 4.4 KitKat will be bundled with many changes and will include some great enhancements and features, so probably this update is supposed to be big and could bring huge changes to the Sony Xperia flagships," notes AndroidSaS. "The update will also bring security and bug fixes and optimized X-Reality Engine will also be bundled with this update. But unfortunately there is no official words on it so consider this news as the rumor."

Not only is there no official announcement regarding the Android 4.4 KitKat rollout, but this whole idea of the Xperia Z1 getting the new OS in early November seems a bit odd to say the least. The Sony Xperia Z1 currently runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. This means that there is still a step left between the current OS and the newly-announced Android version, and that is Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

It would not be the first time that a company decides to skip an Android version and go straight to the latest build, as HTC just proved with its Android 4.3 update for the HTC One. There is, however, a big difference between the two instances. Android 4.3 is already out, whereas Android 4.4 KitKat is barely official and with no rollout date yet, not even for the Google Nexus lineup of devices.

It would seem more plausible for Sony to update its Xperia Z1 flagship to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, perhaps with a subsequent update to Android 4.4 KitKat sometime after that.

If this report is to be believed, Sony will skip Android 4.3 altogether and bump its flagship Xperia Z1 straight to Android 4.4 KitKat next month. As good as it may sound, take this news with a hefty grain of salt, as it seems rather unlikely.
