Samsung has unveiled more details about its upcoming Ativ Book 9 Plus Ultrabook and has also announced a new Windows 8 tablet.
The Ativ Book 9 is widely expected to launch as a Windows 8 competitor to the MacBook Pro. In addition, Samsung has now announced the new Ativ Tab 3 Windows 8 tablet.
Samsung first unveiled its new Ativ Book 9 Plus back in June and now the company finally shared more details about the Ultrabook's upcoming launch. The device will pack a 13.3-inch display with Gorilla Glass protection and a high resolution of 3,200 x 1,800. This whopping resolution beats that of the similarly-sized MacBook Pro with Retina display, which has a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution.
The upcoming Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus is also lighter and thinner than the corresponding Apple notebook, weighing 3.1 pounds and measuring 0.35 inches. In terms of specs, Samsung's offering sports an Intel Core i5-4200U processor, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive.
The most notable difference between the Ativ Book 9 and the MacBook Pro, however, lies in pricing: Samsung's device will cost $100 less than the cheapest Retina display MacBook Pro, i.e. $1,399 when it goes up for pre-order on Aug. 18.
The Ativ Tab 3, meanwhile, will launch as the world's thinnest Windows 8 tablet, according to Samsung. The slate has a 10-inch display, measures just 0.31 inches in thickness and weighs in at 1.28 pounds. For the sake of comparison, the latest iPad is 0.37-inch thick and weighs 1.44 pounds.
Samsung's new Ativ Tab 3 will pack an Intel Atom Z2760 processor, 2GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It has a lower resolution of 1,366 x 768, but the slate does come with an S Pen digital stylus and a cover with built-in Bluetooth keyboard and kickstand. This tablet will go on sale on Sept. 1 for $699.99 and will come with Microsoft Office Home & Student.
These two new Windows 8 offerings from Samsung will make their debut just in time for back-to-school shoppers and aim to take on Apple's MacBook Pro and latest iPad.
