Samsung not only has the distinction of being the smartphone market leader, but also of creating the most viral tech ad for 2012. The Korean company's advert that mocked Apple's iPhone 5 has earned the top spot in a Top 10 list compiled by video analytics firm Visible Measures.
Visible Measures compiled the 'Top 10 Most Viral Tech Ads of 2012' list based on its True Reach methodology, where Samsung Galaxy S3's 'Next Big Thing' "satirical campaign mocking Apple and its fans" took the top honors with over 71 million views.
"As the battle for the smartphone and tablet market rages on, one of the most effective methods for reaching consumers is through video advertising. To show who's winning in this battle, we've produced the Top 10 Most Viral Video Tech Ads of 2012, based on our True Reach methodology," noted Visible Measures.
In addition to making it to the number one spot, Samsung also grabbed three other spots in the Top 10 list i.e. third, fourth, and eighth for LeBron's Day, Introducing Galaxy Note 10.1, and Global Launch Galaxy Note 2 (private video), respectively.
By contrast, arch rival Apple, who had the most-watched Tech Ad of 2011, has only one campaign in the 2012 Top 10 list. Even though Apple's overall performance has risen 16 percent to 57.8 million views, the average count per campaign has seen a decline of 11 percent to 4.4 million views.
Claiming the second spot with 17 million less views than Samsung was Intel and Toshiba's "groundbreaking social film" called 'The Beauty Inside.' The advert accounted for 54.4 million views in 2012.
Google's 'Project Glass' and 'Google Nexus 7' campaigns snagged the fifth and ninth spots, respectively. Apple ('Introducing iPhone 5') and LG's ('So real It's Scary') adverts took the sixth and seventh spots. The list was rounded up with Microsoft's teaser campaign for Surface ('Surface By Microsoft') at number 10.
"Samsung, Google, and Microsoft each saw massive growth in 2012 both on a brand and campaign basis. Samsung generated over 240 million views from campaigns launch in 2012, a 580% increase over 2011, and averaged 9.2 million views per campaign, a jump of nearly 400%. Google and Microsoft also saw triple digit increases in overall brand performance in video in 2012," reported Visible Measures.
Considering, Apple's video advertising hasn't seen much growth in 2012, when compared to rivals, in order to stay in contention in 2013, the Cupertino-based company will need to volte-face its video campaign strategies.
