Cloud gaming company OnLive announced on Thursday, Nov. 1, that its popular gaming service is now integrated into LG G2 Series TVs.
The deal with LG adds console-quality video games to the mix, allowing some LG Smart TV owners to enjoy a superior gaming experience without having to plug in an Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3. The deal makes Google TV the first television set to feature instant-response streaming games.
LG is one of several firms making Google TV hardware, and the company's G2 series sets have Google's TV service built-in.
OnLive is a popular cloud-based gaming service that relies on fast net links rather than using dedicated devices, allowing users to play their favorite video games on demand.
Following the deal with electronics company LG, people using Google TV via an LG set will receive the OnLive gaming service via an update, which has already started to roll out. Moreover, the service will also be standard on all future devices.
The day before this agreement was unveiled, Google itself announced a broader update for its TV service. LG's line of Google TV-enabled G2 televisions will be the first devices to receive the 3.0 update, LG announced. The upgrade added voice searching and updated several other applications. Google TV has also rebranded its TV & Movies applications, which is now called "PrimeTime." The quick guide also sports updates that make it easier to search for shows and movies.
The OnLive integration with LG televisions aims to improve the entire LG Google TV experience. The integration was announced during the E3 event back in June, and the service offers more than 300 games to choose from.
To be able to play games, however, users will have to buy OnLive's special wireless controller, which comes with a $50 price tag in the U.S. The games OnLive brings to the table include Sleeping Dogs, Darksiders II and Civilization V.
"Our partnership with LG has enabled us to make an important step forward in making high-end gaming accessible to everyone, across a variety of consumer electronic devices," said OnLive Chairman Gary Lauder. "Gamers can now enjoy hundreds of amazing console-quality games with no new hardware necessary beyond an OnLive controller and LG's fast and intuitive Google TV.
