Apple unveiled its highly anticipated tablet - the iPad mini - at a press event on Oct. 23. The tablet is set to give competition to existing 7-inch devices, including Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, which launched in February this year.
Here's a round-up of the features and specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 and the iPad mini.
Processor
A 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor powers the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. On the other hand, the iPad mini has a dual-core A5 processor.
Display
The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 sports a 7-inch WSVGA PLS TFT display with 1024 x 600 pixels resolution. The iPad mini features a slightly bigger 7.9-inch LED-backlit Multi-Touch display with IPS technology with 1024 x 768 pixels resolution. However, the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 easily routs the Apple offering with a higher pixel density of 170 ppi vis-à-vis the iPad mini's 163 ppi.
Dimensions and Weight
The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 measure 7.63 x 4.82 x 0.41 inches. On the other hand, the iPad mini measures 7.87 x 5.30 x 0.28 inches, making it fractionally taller and wider than the Samsung offering. However, the Samsung tablet is thicker than the iPad mini.
What's more at 12.13oz, the Samsung tablet is heavier than the iPad mini which weighs 10.86 oz, similar to a paper pad as noted by Apple.
Storage
The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 offers 8/16/32GB of on-board storage, which can be expanded to an additional 32GB using a microSD card. The iPad mini offers 16/32/64GB of internal storage, but with no option to expand.
Camera
The iPad mini sports a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera. The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 features a 3-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front-facing snapper.
Operating System
The iPad mini runs on the latest iOS 6. The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 comes pre-loaded with the older version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS).
Battery
The Samsung tablet has a 4000mAh Li-ion battery, which offers 10 hours of usage The iPad mini will include a 16.3 watt-hour battery, which Apple claims will provide 10 hours of continuous productivity.
Price and Availability
Pre-orders for the iPad mini will begin from Oct. 26 and the device will be shipped in November, in time for the holiday season. The iPad mini starts from $329 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model, whereas the 16GB Wi-Fi version of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 costs $350.
