Samsung is on track to add to its gamut of devices and proclaim its status as the smartphone market leader. On Wednesday, Oct. 10, JK Shin, head of Samsung Mobile Communications, confirmed that the company would be releasing a 4-inch version of the hugely-popular Galaxy S3, dubbed the Galaxy S3 Mini, on Oct. 11 in Germany.

Shin made the announcement at a meeting with the Korean press. However, he did not divulge the feature and specification details of the device, but noted that it would be an entry-level device. Shin also mentioned that the growing demand for 4-inch smartphone in Europe acted as a catalyst for Samsung to launch a smaller version of the S3, which will have "full form factor."

"We'll be launching a 4-inch Galaxy S III on the 11th in Germany," said Shin. "There's a lot of demand for a 4-inch screen device in Europe. Some call it an entry-level device, but we call it 'mini.'"

The demand in Europe could well be the reason why Samsung chose to launch the device in Germany.

Earlier in October, it was reported that Samsung had sent out invitations for an Oct. 11 event where it was expected to unveil the Galaxy S3 Mini. The event was to take place at a in Berlin, Germany and the invitation, which was in German, asked invitees to get "Ready for a little sensation? Be there when something small makes a big impact."

Rumors regarding the S3 Mini have been flying thick and fast. On Sept. 30, Dutch Web site GSM Helpdesk reported that the Galaxy S3 Mini debut by year end, in time for the holiday season.

Few details have been disclosed with regard to the Galaxy S3 Mini's features, but the smartphone is expected to be along the lines of the Galaxy S3 in terms of hardware and design barring the smaller form factor.

Rumors indicate that a dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz will power the device. The smartphone will also sport a 4-inch Super AMOLED display with 800 x 480 pixels resolution. It will likely run on the lates Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and pack in a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. Details of memory and on-board storage support, battery, and connectivity abilities are not known.

The device will be unveiled on Oct. 11 and leaks have indicated that it will come in Marble Blue and Ceramic White.

Post the launch, Samsung would have another competitive device in the consumer market, which would be an uncommon addition to the bigger-screen dominated Android smartphone space. However, it remains to be seen if the device can repeat the original Galaxy S3's success story.
