Rovio teased an Angry Birds-Star Wars crossover recently; however, the company did not divulge any details. Now, the company has unveiled a trailer (below) revealing Nov. 8 as the release date for the game. However, the content or structure of the game is unconfirmed. It is also unclear whether six titles will follow the structure of the saga or just three to follow the original trilogy; however, the game's marketing is focusing on the original trilogy.
A promotional image on the title reveals the pigs as The Empire, with Darth Vader chief among them. The birds take the role of characters from the original trilogy. To illustrate, tthe Red Bed is Luke Skywalker, and a Chewbacca bird features as well. Moreover, the birds are set to take on multiple characters, with the Red Bird become an X-Wing pilot. How that sequence will translate into an Angry Birds game is unknown. Perhaps, the Death Star will take the role of a planet.
"They are not Angry Birds dressed up as Star Wars characters. They are characters in their own right," said Paul Southern, VP of Product Marketing for Lucasfilm Ltd.
Lucasfilm and Rovio have previously collaborated with NASA for Angry Birds Space, the original sequel to Angry Birds. Rovio also worked with Twentieth Century Fox to launch Angry Birds Rio. Fox also distributes Star Wars.
The game will play similarly to Angry Birds Space, focusing on manipulating gravity as birds orbit planets. Planets including Tatooine and Hoth feature alongside John Williams' score.
"Let's just say there's some really fun music in there. It is very magical," added Andrew Stalbow, EVP of Strategic Partnerships, Rovio.
Game merchandize, i.e., toys and clothing, will launch a week before the game is rolled out, adding to the $25 million earned, Idle Hands reported. Toys include a Jenga Death Star, a Figure Pack of the birds, costumes in shape of the birds, and six plush toys of key characters like Princess Leia and Stormtrooper.
Angry Birds Star Wars releases Nov. 6 on iOS, Android, and PC.
