Google is rolling out a brand new feature for its Google Home smart speaker this week, which should be quite useful for wannabe chefs. The new feature now allows the Home speaker to read out over 5 million different recipes along with several voice commands that should make cooking with the device a full hands-free affair.
According to Engadget, the update to the software of the device now allows it to have access to more than 5 million recipes from a number of websites such as Food Network, All Recipes, the New York Times, and several other cooking and recipe websites. Google Home can read out each recipe step-by-step, giving users enough time to complete each task.
To initiate the feature, users will have to first use their smartphone to look for the recipe they want to try out. Users can use a variety of ways to search for recipes, including Google search and Google Assistant. Once a recipe is located a new "send to Google Home" button will become present. Pressing the button will forward the recipe to the device. Saying "OK Google, start cooking," will initiate the process and the speaker will read out the first line.
Users can then command the assistant to go forward or to repeat the instruction if needed. The cool thing about the feature is that the speaker can still be used for other questions and commands in the middle of cooking. Google Home will take note of where the recipe had left off and will continue from there despite various interruptions. Music can also be played in the background and users will still have full access to other features in the middle of cooking as well.
As per a report from PC Magazine, Amazon's Echo speaker already has this feature, but only to a limited extent. Amazon is slowing growing its database of recipes, but Google is offering almost all of the recipes available online right off the bat.
