Facebook (FB) has a new tool to curb the proliferation of revenge porn in its social media platform. According to reports, the company will be using a new tool to fight the social media endemic.
Facebook revealed its plans on Wednesday to its affiliated news website. In a post by the FB Newsroom, a variety of measures will be seriously implemented across its IP's.
Affected users can report revenge porn on "specially trained representatives" of Facebook. The trained reps will review the image and remove it if it violates FB Standards.
Facebook will also disable accounts of users that share private images without permission. The company added that they will be using photo-matching technology to counter re-shares.
Messenger and Instagram will also be using the tool to stop third parties from re-sharing the images. Facebook said that safety experts and organizations co-developed the tool.
Despite the measures, BGR writer Chris Smith believes that it's not enough. He stated that the "system is great in theory... but someone still has to report the shared private images."
He added that it's still unclear what happens if the images end up in private groups inside Facebook. Smith believes that FB will only stop revenge porn from shared within its own apps.
The bigger problem is when the image lands in various places outside of Facebook's reach. But, the BGR writer did acknowledge that the social media platform is heading in the right path.
Facebook reportedly partnered with several organizations that campaigned against revenge porn. Among the groups are the NNEDV, Center for Social Research, and the Revenge porn Helpline (UK). The Cyber Civil Rights Initiative also took part for FB's new directive.
According to The Hill, California Rep. Jackie Speier lauded Facebook's efforts. She said that "the new tools are a huge advancement" against non-consensual pornography.
Speier is looking to push legislation against the dissemination of revenge porn online. Stay tuned for updates.
