Google has now officially launched their latest live-TV streaming service, YouTube TV. The service was initially announced earlier in the year and will be similar to Sling TV, PlayStation View, and AT&T's Direct Now streaming service. Interested customers can now download the standalone app for the service, which is available for both Android and iOS via the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, respectively.
According to The Verge, the service itself currently offers over 40 channels, but that is expected to grow as more networks are acquired. The channels are mostly comprised of broadcasts from the big four networks, namely 20th Century Fox, ABC, CBS, and NBC Universal. Google is still of course in the process of arranging deals with the other networks, which usually doesn't happen overnight.
As of the moment, the live-TV streaming service is available in a limited number of areas in the United States, but it should be rolled out to the rest of the country in the coming months. Currently, only cities like Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Los Angeles have access.
The YouTube TV service will cost customers $35 a month for the subscription, but up to six users can share a single account. Unfortunately, only three devices are allowed to stream at the same time. This would still be perfect for families who want to watch different shows in different areas of their homes.
The YouTube TV app does work on a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, Chromecast, and other streaming devices. Google is also offering a virtual DVR function with unlimited storage for those who want to stream their favorite shows at a later time. This also gives users the power to skip through commercials or rewind their favorites shows. As per Business Insider, Google is currently offering customers a free one-month trial with no contracts, which can be canceled at any time.
