Blizzard's "World of Warcraft" is one of the world's most populated online game. The sheer number of players the MMORPG has makes it susceptible to online fraud and email scam.
Apparently, evidence of phishers attacking fans of the game has surfaced online. According to Digital Trends, fraudsters are attacking players with a new email scam.
The scam comes in the form of a link that lures players to enter their account details. The emails are purportedly sent by a "World of Warcraft" developer from Blizzard.
The alleged developer will claim that the user has been given an in-game pet. That is where phishers will lead users to the fraudulent link according to Graham Cluley. Wary and privacy conscious players can quickly identify the fake URL.
Aside from the fake in-game pet, phishers also fool "Warcraft" players via a free flying mount. Fans of the MMORPG should be wary if prompts of the free items appear in their accounts.
Allegedly the free pet's name is "Brigtpaw" while the mount is called the "Mystic Runesaber." Both creatures are real in-game items that can be bought through the game's online shop.
"World of Warcraft" players should be vigilant about any emails that claim to be from Blizzard. Aside from the email scam, there are reports of other fraudulent activity that aim to trick users.
Examples include fake surveys and links that offer players huge cash prizes. Phishing attacks are also not limited to gamers, as online fraudsters have become more creative. According to Forbes, online fraud has always been there since the internet boom.
The best approach to avoid the scams is to have a vigilant eye on suspicious emails. Online users are highly urged to install internet security programs to avoid the threats. Stay tuned for more updates.
