According to reports circulating around the internet, a new female droid will also star in the untitled Han Solo movie. The upcoming "Star Wars" standalone film has already cast Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian.
Tribute has revealed that the female droid will be portrayed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge ("Fleabag"). However, Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to confirm this. The only official information about the role is that it will be "a CG character, and the actress will be working with motion capture."
While the upcoming Han Solo movie will be the first to have a female actress "fully portray a droid," there have been other female droids in the "Star Wars" franchise before. The franchise's first droid with "feminine programming" was TC-14, who as voiced by Lindsay Duncan, in "Episode I - The Phantom Menace."
Other female robots include BD-3000 and Bettie-Bot VJ, and both have been seen in the animated "Star Wars" series "Clone Wars." Fans of the franchise have long debated over the gender-specific droids in "Star Wars." Droids like C-3PO (portrayed by Anthony Daniels) are clearly male. Even K-2SO (played by Alan Tudyk) from "Rogue One" was portrayed as male.
While fans initially though the adorable BB-8 was a female droid, filmmakers who worked on "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" have confirmed that he is actually a male droid. Meanwhile, R2-D2 is "widely considered an androgynous character" since it does not have any distinct male or female attributes.
The Waller-Bridge's character in the untitled Han Solo movie will be the first female droid to be "significantly featured" in the "Star Wars" franchise, per The Mary Sue. Despite all the secrecy behind the female droid's role in the upcoming film, fans can expect that like C3-PO, R2-D2, and K2 before her, she will most likely be a source of comic relief.
Aside from Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson have also been cast in undisclosed roles. The untitled Han Solo movie is slated for a May 25, 2018 release date.
