Samsung took to the IFA 2012 show in Berlin to launch a refreshed range of Windows 8-powered all-in-one PCs: the Series 5 and the Series 7. Both series sport 10-point touch displays, designed to take full advantage of Microsoft's latest operating system.
The updated Samsung Series 7 comes with two new models, one with a 23.6-inch display, and the other with a 27-inch display. Both models have the same number of pixels in their touch screen displays and both come with Windows 8 and 10-point touch, but the architecture is custom-fit to ensure each machine holds its own.
The 23-inch model comes with Genuine Windows 8 64-bit software out of the box and has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution display. Under the hood, the PC is powered by an Ivy Bridge processor, Intel Core i5 - 2470T, paired with 6GB DDR3 system memory at 1,600MHz. It packs a 1TB hard disk drive and will be available on Oct. 26 for MRSP $1,099.
The other model, the 27-inch all-in-one PC, will arrive on the same date for MRSP $1,699. It also comes with Genuine Windows 8 64-bit, as well as the same 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. This higher- end model also packs a high-powered Ivy Bridge processor, the Intel Core i7 - 3770T, paired with a larger 8GB DDR3 bit of system memory at 1,600MHz. Like its 23-inch sibling, this model also packs a 1TB hard disk drive.
Both of the Series 7 models work with five simple hand gesture recognition features. Using the machines' 1.3-megapixel cameras, users can stand up to three feet away from the device and make gestures to flip a page, start or stop a video, adjust volume levels, or click. Both machines come with a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, as well as a remote control.
Meanwhile, the Series 5 is a more compact all-in-one Windows 8 machine, sporting a 21.5-inch display and the option to tuck its keyboard under the display. The Samsung Series 5 comes with more modest specs than its Series 7 siblings, but it also comes with a lower price tag. It runs on a Core i3 processor, packs 4GB of RAM and a 500MB hard drive, and costs $749. The gesture recognition system is included as well. The Windows 8-powered Samsung Series 5 will also launch on Oct. 26, when the OS itself will become available.
