It looks like fans can rest assured that like the upcoming live-action "Mulan" movie, the live-action treatment of "Aladdin" will also feature a cast of diverse races. Producer Dan Lin ("The Departed," "The Lego Movie") has promised that the movie about the lovable street urchin Aladdin will be devoid of whitewashing.
According to Collider, Guy Ritchie ("Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," "Sherlock Holmes") is in talks to direct Disney's upcoming live-action movie "Aladdin." The company "has no plans to whitewash" the 90s animated film. Collider's Steve Weintraub spoke with Dan Lin, the live-action "Aladdin's" producer, and Lin reassured the former that "Aladdin will be diverse and authentic."
Lin set fans at ease when he said, "Look at me. (Laughs) I mean I'm not a typical guy. Listen I'm very fortunate working in Hollywood; I am diverse. So when I came in to make the movie, I wanted to make a diverse version of the movie. Luckily for me Guy Ritchie has the same vision and Disney has the same vision, so we're not here to make Prince of Persia. We want to make a movie that's authentic to that world."
Lin also hinted that Ritchie and the team behind the live-action adaptation could be keeping an eye on talented newcomers who will portray Aladdin and Jasmine. The upcoming film will also feature musical numbers like the original animated Disney movie.
The producer added, "We're gonna be discovering new people because it's a real challenge, because not only does an actor have to act, but they really have to have singing chops." Lin praised Disney for doing "an amazing job," citing the live-action movie "Cinderella" as an example.
He also praised "Beauty and the Beast," which stars Emma Watson and Dan Stevens. Lin said, "I saw it last week, the movie's excellent. So they've really raised the bar for these musicals and these animation-to-live-action adaptations, that we have to then raise the bar on Aladdin."
The live-action "Aladdin" film still doesn't have a confirmed release date, per Movie Pilot. However, Lin teased that Aladdin could soon make his live-action debut following the release of "Beauty and the Beast."
