Fans of the "Anne of Green Gables" book series will once again see Anne on the small screen. "Anne," the Netflix show based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's books, is slated for a May 2017 release.
According to Vulture, the upcoming Netflix series "Anne" will be based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's book "Anne of Green Gables," which is the first novel in the series of the same name. The show will feature Anne Shirley, who is "a spirited young orphan (portrayed bv Amybeth McNulty)."
Anne "mistakenly gets sent to live with an aging brother-and-sister duo at their Green Gables farm on Prince Edward Island, our lovely Anne, ever the optimist, makes the best of the situation and ends up positively transforming the lives of everyone in the town."
While the teaser for the series didn't reveal much about the show's plot, Netflix promised that "Anne" will "reflect timeless and topical issues including themes of identity, feminism, bullying and prejudice." The video shows Anne in braided pigtails, a lovely blue dress, and a straw hat designed with charming flowers that Anne herself has tucked in the brim.
The preview cheekily warns, "Just don't call her carrots" before panning to Anne hitting a male classmate in the face with a book. Too bad he didn't heed the warning. The show will soon be available to stream on May 12, 2017, per Teen Vogue.
Nerdist has revealed that McNulty was first announced as the actress who will portray Anne last year. However, "Anne" won't be the first time Montgomery's work has been adapted in film, TV, and event plays. There have been five TV adaptations of "Anne of Green Gables," 12 made-for-TV movies, six stage productions, and four films about the red-headed girl.
The rest of "Anne's" cast includes Geraldine James as Marilla Cuthbert, R.H. Thomson as Matthew Cuthbert, Lucas Jade Zumann as Gilbert Blythe, Dalila Bela as Diana Barry, Corinne Koslo as Rachel Lynde, and Aymeric Jett Montaz as Jerry Baynard.
