When Pokémon Sun and Moon was released, many players noticed the obvious shortage of Mega Stones implemented in the previous generation. Post-game did feature a few of the Stones, but not all of those found in generation 6 were even obtainable.

Recently, the Pokémon Company described how the rest of the Mega Stones will be provided to those who would like to buff their Pokémon in Pokémon Sun and Moon in the Alola Region. A promotion debuting for Pokémon Sun and Moon next month will allow players to amass previously inaccessible Mega Stones, according to Japanese Global Link site. This will enable players to collect and use even more of these special battle items, which were introduced to the franchise with Pokémon X and Y.

For players to receive these Mega Stones, they have to participate in online competitions. The first of these campaigns will take place in a later part of February. Serebii notes that Beedrillite and Mawilite will be available as an entry gift for the online competition. Other missing Mega Stones will likewise be distributed in this manner. Beedrillite and Mawilite will power up Beedrill and Mawile in Pokémon Sun and Moon. These two Pokémon were not competitively viable until their Mega Evolutions were introduced.

More Mega Stones are due for release in the future. However, no release date or specific details are given yet. Future giveaways will also include Mega Stones not readily available in Pokémon Sun and Moon.

Mega Evolutions and their accompanying items were a major part of the storyline in Pokémon X and Y. They took a backseat, however, to the Z-Move mechanic in November's Nintendo 3DS follow-ups. Mega Stones are still available in Pokémon Sun and Moon, but players have to complete the bulk of the games first.
