The upcoming 89th Academy Awards this February 26 will be a huge moment for the women of Hollywood. For one, Meryl Streep has broken her record for Oscar nominations.
Meryl Streep is the actress fans know for several memorable roles, such as in "The Devil Wears Prada," "The Deer Hunter" and "The Bridges of Madison County." Streep has been known for her versatility in acting and bringing the characters to life. It is no surprise that she has been nominated several times for an Oscar.
However, the 2017 Oscars will be a more memorable year for the actress. Her role for 2016 movie "Florence Foster Jenkins" marks her 20th Academy awards nomination. This has officially made her the most nominated actor for an Oscar. Her first win was for the movie "Kramer vs Kramer" as Best Supporting Actress.
According to News 18, Meryl Streep also has acquired several Golden Globe nominations. In total, she has received 30 Golden Globe nominations, including this year for her role in "Florence Foster Jenkins." However, actress Emma Stone won the Best Actress award for "La La Land."
Meryl Streep is not the only actress to break any record for this year's Academy Awards. Viola Davis has also become a living legend by being nominated for an Oscar for the third time. She is the first and only black American actress to do so. Davis is now nominated for a Best Actress for her role in "Fences," one of the nominees for Best Picture.
Previously, Viola Davis tied with Whoopi Goldberg as the first black women to have acquired an Oscar nomination twice, according to Fortune. Goldberg, however, had made a mark of her own in the past, when she becoming one of the very few people who has earned an EGOT status. EGOT status is only given to actors who have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony award.
Behind the scenes, other Hollywood women are also garnering attention. Joi McMillon also made history by being the first black woman to earn an Oscar nomination for film editing.
Apart from that, the list of 2017 Oscar nominees is more diverse than the last. Previous Oscars were surrounded by controversy, claiming that there were less and less black people being nominated for awards.
