The story started with a scene where Ryan and his father, the Navy Captain, were driving along having a conversation. Ryan was down on his luck as he recently lost his job. His father decided to stop at an ATM machine so that he can give Ryan some money to get him by until he finds another job. Then tragedy struck.
While crossing the street to get to the ATM, Ryan's father was hit by a car instantly killing him. The NCIS team was called to investigate the incident.
When Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon, and Jimmy arrived at the scene, Jimmy noticed a man on the ledge of the roof and is looking to jump, it was Ryan. Without hesitation, Jimmy ran up the stairs and grabbed Ryan to stop him from jumping.
Meanwhile, Gibbs secretly put a microphone inside a burger package which he gave to Palmer so he can listen in on the two while investigating the death of Ryan's father. Ryan felt extremely guilty over the death of his father and thought if it wasn't for him, his father wouldn't stop at an ATM machine and could have prevented his untimely death.
Jimmy is trying his best to stay optimistic and make Ryan believe there is more to life. The NCIS also discovers that the man who hit Ryan's father had a string of DUI's.
The biggest surprise of the episode is when Jimmy revealed that he is now Dr. Palmer after he went to medical school and passed the exams after taking it three times. Jimmy said that he would leave NCIS at some point but for now, he will still help the team whenever he can. In the end, Ryan didn't jump and is thankful to Jimmy for saving his life.
