After a long delayed redesign, the first major update to Google Voice in years has just been announced. Updated versions of Voice available for Android, iOS and on the web can now be used.
Google Voice helps users manage their voice communication better using their phone number. This app allows users to access Google Voice to call, archive and search all text and transcripts voicemail on all their devices via a common, connected phone number, according to Tech I.E.
Redesigned Interface, New Features
"It's been some years since we did noteworthy updates to the Google Voice, but today we're bringing a fresh set of features to Google Voice with updates to our apps," said Jan Jedrzejowicz, Product Manager, Google Voice. Google Voice is still limited to US and Canada in the meantime.
These Google Voice updates will launch first on Android, followed by iOS in a couple days. Everyone should have it within a couple weeks, according to Google. Once the user's mobile app is updated, the web client will automatically change over to the new design. shares The Verge.
The inbox now has separate tabs for text messages, calls and voicemails. Conversations stay in one continuous thread, so user can easily see all messages from each contact in one place. There is also a new Security setting to filter spam from all types of communications. Meanwhile, old features like voicemail transcription -- now available for Spanish -- are still present.
Still More Room For Improvement
On Android, the UI is standard Material Design with a FAB and three tabs that show missed items. At launch, version 5.0 sports a rounded icon for the Pixel and support for Nougat's Direct Reply, but does not have a mini conversation view in notifications like Google Messenger. Also lacking is support for Gboard's GIF keyboard, Direct Share, and 7.1's app shortcuts.
