HTC is setting aside $10 million to create new VR tech and experiences to a greater cause. The cash will be distributed through the new "VR for Impact Program." The program is supporting the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals.
In a post by Gamasutra, HTC is united to the UN's call to action to various social issues. This includes poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring sustainable peace and prosperity.
The company stated that "VR's ability to immerse people" is key to educating us on global issues. The initiative aims to add awareness to the following social concerns.
Aside from the company's industry partners, the Vive maker also hinted it is open to all. Interested individuals who would like to sign up can submit their ideas on the official VR for Impact website. Selected projects will be revealed on April 22.
Recently, a Game Developers Conference survey revealed that HTC is leading the way for VR in 2017. The spike in interest for the company's Vive VR headset has surpassed Oculus Rift and Sony's PlayStation VR. More and more developers are banking on the company's VR headset compared to last year.
In other news, Donald Trump's inauguration is on its way and several developers have created a way to virtually meet the upcoming POTUS. According to CNET, "Wide Awake" allows users to explore the White House's Oval Office. The VR experience is fully detailed and is an almost exact replica of the famous office. In the middle of the office stands Trump. In a statement from HTC, the company describes VR Trump as the most photo-realistic human in VR today.
"Wide Awake" is now available in the Vive's app store. The app was developed by John MacInnes. The VR app allows users to even check out Trump's hands. Stay tuned for more updates.
