"Game of Thrones" Season 7 will be returning to small screens later this year with only seven episodes. For the past several years, the HBO show has managed to keep its spot as one of the most watched shows on television. That said, HBO heads are reportedly looking into venturing further into the "Game of Thrones" universe.

According to HBO CEO Richard Plepler, talks about extending the brand of "Game of Thrones" are underway. "That would be exciting," Plepler told The Hollywood Reporter. "It certainly has not escaped the producers."

Although they are looking forward to having a "Game of Thrones" spinoff, Plepler has revealed that they are "focused on finishing the series with the kind of energy and excitement that everyone has come to expect." "We are going to do that while, at the same time, parallel processing very embryonic stages of other possibilities," he added.

Casey Bloys, the President of HBO Programming, revealed to Variety that nothing has been physically done yet regarding a "Game of Thrones" spinoff. "We do not have scripts," he said. "We are not even close to saying, 'Oh, let us do this.'"

Right now, Bloys can only admit that he and the rest of the "Game of Thrones" team is "exploring it" the possibility of a spinoff. According to him, George R. R. Martin has created plenty of source material for prequels and spinoffs. "It is a big enough property that we would be foolish not to explore it," Bloys added. "It is a really rich world."

GRRM has come up with a lot of content from his "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series - which has not even been completed yet. One story that, according to Screen Rant, has a lot of potential to be used for a spinoff is the author's "Tales of Dunk and Egg." This series is set around 90 years before the timeline of "Game of Thrones."
