Despite Motorola devices being banned in the U.S., the company said it is taking "proactive measures" to make sure that its smartphones are available to customers in the U.S. The ban on the company's products takes effect on Wednesday, July 18, 2012.

The patent dispute was related to Microsoft and patents covering meeting requests and scheduling for groups from a mobile device called ActiveSync.

Devices affected by the ban have not been specified; smartphones, while banned, can be replaced, repaired or serviced if under warranty or an "insurance contract" according to PCWorld.

"In view of the ITC exclusion order which becomes effective Wednesday with respect to the single ActiveSync patent upheld in Microsoft's ITC-774 proceeding, Motorola has taken proactive measures to ensure that our industry-leading smartphones remain available to consumers in the U.S.," the company said in a statement following the news.

A source familiar with the matter, speaking to PCWorld, said Motorola may avoid the ban by "disabling or implementing differently a specific calendar syncing feature of ActiveSync in which calendar meeting requests are generated by an ActiveSync-enabled mobile phone."

Acquired by Google, Motorola did not work on Google's Nexus 7 tablet. Rather than Google absorbing the company, it seems both will continue to work separately despite the acquisition. It's not known how long the ban will last for, if implemented, but will probably be tied to Motorola adjusting the infringing features.

Motorola's impending ban is the latest round in the cross-company patent wars: Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console is threatened by a U.S. ban, after previously being banned in Germany, while Apple has consistently claimed Samsung's Galaxy Tab devices closely resemble the iPad. Google also faced issues with its Galaxy Nexus smartphone, which were made unavailable for a week from the Google Play store due to a patent dispute. The device is now on sale.

Motorola's latest device is the Motorola Atrix HD and Mobile & Apps analyzed the device to see if it's worth buying over more recent devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S3. How the recent ban affects the company long term remains to be seen.
