Chinese social network Weibo caused a stir when what was claimed to be a leaked photo of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy 8 was uploaded to the site. Unfortunately for excited fans, rumors and speculations are the best we're getting, as the image's authenticity remains unconfirmed. Whether Samsung will even address this apparent leak also remains to be seen.

If the image is real, it's the officially the public's first look at Samsung's first flagship effort since the Galaxy Note 7 series, Mashable reports. While nothing's been officially announced, the physical design of the phone does match up to reported descriptions of the upcoming Samsung device.

Most interesting to note is how the navigation and home buttons seem to be missing on the bottom bezel of the phone's front. Speculations guess it's been removed in favor of virtual display controls. The phone also sports curved edges and, in the photo, a sleek gold color.

iTechPost posits that the phone display is around 5.7 to 6.2 inches in size - judging from the leaked image - which makes it comparatively bigger than the Galaxy S7 Edge, which had a 5.5-inch display. Ditching the physical buttons makes sense with a screen that size, but this too is purely guesswork. Since there's nothing to use as scale in the photo, measurements remain indefinite.

Samsung has remained incredibly protective over details pertaining to Galaxy 8. Originally, the phone was expected to be unveiled during the Mobile World Congress this year. This runs from February 27 until March 2, especially since Samsung traditionally makes an appearance. Reports suggest otherwise, saying that the South Korean conglomerate plans to set up its own event for the unveiling.

This event is said to be slated for March 2017, and the chosen venue is New York, after which the Samsung Galaxy 8 will be available for purchase on April 18. Still no official announcement from Samsung to confirm dates.
