Apple iPhone 4S has an awesome Retina display with pixel density rate of 330 pixels per inch (ppi). It is, so far, unmatched in terms of screen sharpness and clarity by any other display featured in rival smartphones. But the charisma of Apple’s so-called “Retina display” is just about to end as LG has showed off its 5-inch LCD display that maxes out at full-HD resolution offering an excessive pixel density of 440ppi.

LG's mobile screen utilizes a variant of LCD technology known as AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In Plane Switching). The new tech yields wider viewing angles with improved efficiency. LG says that naked human eye will fail to detect individual pixels, and the inclusion of IPS technology means superior color reproduction, extra brightness, wide viewing angles and low power consumption.

Unfortunately, the display isn't fitted inside a smartphone to take a look at what 440ppi looks like. LG is likely to begin the mass production of the new display this summer, so that it can debut in latter half of 2012.

Earlier this month, reports surfaced online that the Korean mobile major is working on an Android super phone, after BriefMobile leaked a screenshot of the alleged smartphone. Known as LG Eclipse, the smartphone features a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, Adreno 320 GPU, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, making it one of the most powerful smartphones of 2012. LG's new display technology is likely to be featured in the Eclipse smartphone.

As LG Display is also one of retina display suppliers of Apple, rumors about the inclusion of new display in Apple's upcoming smartphone dubbed iPhone 5 are also on a hike. However, we think that it is not going to happen. Firstly, Apple might never consider to bump-up the screen size to that level. And secondly, Apple has adopted a secretive nature and if the new display tech was meant to be utilized in iPhone 5, LG would have never revealed the technology publicly before the device gets rolled out in the market.

The 5-inch display is scheduled to debut sometime in second half of 2012. In case you are eager to take a look at the whopping 1080p mobile display, LG is showcasing the new screen at SID 2012 display week starting June 4 in Boston.
