Fans have been waiting excitedly for Nintendo's upcoming mobile game "Super Mario Run." Most, however, were turned off by the idea that players would need to stay online to actually play the game.
In an interview with Mashable, "Super Mario" creator Shigeru Miyamoto explained why having an Internet connection is required when playing the latest game.
Why "Super Mario Run" Requires Internet Connection
The father of "Mario" confirmed that the game will require internet connection due to security concerns, among others.
"For us, we view our software as being a very important asset for us," Miyamoto said through a translator. "And also for consumers who are purchasing the game, we want to make sure that we're able to offer it to them in a way that the software is secure, and that they're able to play it in a stable environment."
Miyamoto explained further that security is also the main reason why Nintendo opted to launch the game on iOS first. "So this is just - based on the current development environment - a requirement that's been built into the game to support security," Miyamoto continued, "and the fact that the three different modes are connecting to the network and interacting with one another."
The "Mario" creator also confirmed to Mashable that the company wants to avoid piracy, hence the need to connect online.
Miyamoto also said that they have considered having the World Tour story mode available online, while the other two modes, Toad Rally and Kingdom Builder modes remains online. However, this is not as straightforward as anyone thinks it is.
"... It actually complicates the connection back to the Toad Rally and Kingdom modes," Miyamoto said. "And because those two modes are relying on the network save, we had to integrate the World Tour mode as well."
Super Mario Run" will be released on iPhone and iPad devices in 151 countries and regions on Dec. 15. The app will also be released on Android devices, although there is still no set date for it yet.
There are also rumors that "Super Mario Run" will possibly come to the new Nintendo Switch, although this information is yet to be confirmed by the company.
