As announced on their site earlier this week, actors union SAG-AFTRA has set up a picket in front of the Electronic Arts offices in Playa Vista on Monday, Oct. 24, in protest against a breakdown in negotiations between them and various video game companies, The Los Angeles Times reported.
SAG-AFTRA, a union that represents voice actors and stunt performers, has stated that they have launched a strike against video game companies like Activision, Insomniac Games, WB Games, and more.
"After nearly two years, management has been unwilling to resolve these issues in an equitable manner," the union said on its press release prior to the picket. "This strike is not the union's preferred outcome, but is necessary to let employers know SAG-AFTRA members will stand fast to their principles and not be exploited."
This week, video game companies, represented by Barnes & Thornburg lawyer and chief negotiator Scott Witlin, has hit back at the union with a statement. The lawyer said that the union did not clearly communicate its most recent proposal to its members prior to the call to strike on Friday.
"If I was a performer, I would want the opportunity to say yes or no," Witlin said.
Prominent voice actress Jennifer Hale, who has voiced various characters from popular video games like "Halo" and "World of Warcraft," and is also part of SAG-AFTRA's negotation team, commented, "We know where our members stand and we'll put a deal in front of our members when we have one that our committee can recommend."
During the closing statement, Witlin pointed out that the union's continuous strike is "disingenuous and paternalistic," TechRaptor reported.
"SAG-AFTRA should allow its affected members to vote on the Companies' final proposal and determine for themselves whether the semantic difference that does exist between "additional compensation" and "residual" is worth the costs of a strike," Witlin said.
The union will keep up the strike to pressure these video game companies, and is planning to reach out to others for support.
