It seems that Nina Dobrev is poised to return as Elena Gilbert in the upcoming 8th season of The CW's "The Vampire Diaries." Recently, executive producer Julie Plec spilled some beans about what's next for the Salvatore brothers once the show returns.

In "The Vampire Diaries" season 8, fans can expect to see Damon (Ian Somerhalder) controlled by an abhorrent entity. This apparently made Stefan (Paul Wesley) worry about his brother's future with Elena.

"Stefan somehow inherently understands that what's happened to his brother is not Damon's fault," Plec teased to Entertainment Weekly. "Whatever is going on with Damon, he's under some sort of control or is in some situation that he can't entirely get out of."

Plec added: "He's very focused on trying to rescue his brother from this mess, understanding that the fallout of whatever it is that Damon has to do could impact his ability to be reunited with Elena one day."

Much to delight of many, Paul Wesley previously dished a couple of spoilers about what's in store for the series. As noted by TV Guide, Wesley revealed that "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 will be going to be really dark, twisted and much more fun.

While nothing is officially set in stone yet, Dobrev coming back to "The Vampire Diaries" would supposedly rake the upcoming season 8's viewership ratings. Earlier reports claimed that many viewers lost enthusiasm after the Bulgarian-Canadian actress left the series last April 2015.

It can be recalled that the seventh season of "The Vampire Diaries" posted a significant drop in the viewership with only 26 percent ratings and an average audience of only 1.1 million viewers.

As of press time, there is still no official word whether Nina Dobrev will return on "The Vampire Diaries" season 8. Be sure to stay tuned for more news and updates.
