Those who have been waiting for "Descendants of the Sun" season 2 can now celebrate, as KBS 2TV just confirmed that the sequel is already in development. The sequel to the hit melodrama is intended to premiere at some point in 2017.

However, both Song Joong-Ki and Song Hye-Kyo, through their respective agents, have declined to return for "Descendants of the Sun" season 2 due to scheduling conflicts.

In an interview with local newsoutlet Naver TV, as cited by Soompi, KBS's head of drama department Jung Sung-Ho stated that the planned project may include an entirely new storyline than the first installment. It may involve the second leads, Jin Goo and Kim Ji Won, who portrayed Sergeant Major Seo Dae Young and First Lieutenant Yoon Myung Ju, respectively.

"We have to keep discussing whether it will be a story of a soldier or not," Jung added. "'Descendants of the Sun' was this year's top drama and greatly contributed to the Hallyu wave and we mean that we wish to work on a project that will follow it closely."

While word on the planned project is constrained, Jung already confirmed that they plan the "Descendants of the Sun" season 2 to hit the airwaves in 2017 through constant negotiations with the cast and production team.

Despite Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo's have both declined to appear in the possible sequel, speculations are rife that the plot will still resolve around the two lead stars, iTechPost reported. It is believed that the second season will focus on Captain Yoo Si Jin (Song Joong Ki) and Dr. Kang Mo Yeon's (Song Hye-Kyo) family life and how would they balance it to their respective career.

While nothing is impossible, the report should be taken with a grain of salt unless KBS 2TV officially confirmed it. Stay tuned here in Mobile & Apps for more news and details.
