Blizzard has caught players in a whirlwind wild goose chase for the reveal of "Overwatch"'s 23rd character, Sombra. However, it looks like players have lost interest in the previously exciting ARG games.
Blizzard has been dropping hints about its next "Overwatch" hero, the mysterious Sombra, since the game was launched in May. The whole "Overwatch" community was into it at first, even getting alternate-reality game experts Game Detectives to join in.
Players were under the impression that solving the clues will eventually lead to Sombra's reveal, according to Forbes. So many clues were already deciphered, but frustrated fans still came out empty handed.
The players were then presented by one countdown timer after another on the website amomentincrime.com. This clue possibly drove the final nail in the coffin, and killed the whole Sombra hype for everyone.
After months of chasing Sombra and her clues, the community has had enough of it. Most have given up on the chase, and even the Game Detectives themselves are this close to giving up.
"A lot of people are disappointed with how much we're having to wait," Game Detective Discord chat admin "Crash" told PC Gamer. "It's mostly just the fact that a countdown was hyped up and anticipated to lead to another trail, but instead just led to another countdown."
"The level of engagement that Blizzard has shown has been commendable," Crash continued. "They're committed to creating well-designed puzzles, monitoring our progress, and even interacting with us through Sombra's messages."
Fans speculated that Blizzard was not ready to release Sombra yet, but was swept by all the hype and just played along with it.
"Blizzard probably intended to release Sombra later," a Redditor commented, "but due to the insane hype created they probably didn't complete the character in time the audience predicted."
Blizzard should step up their game and move away from these cryptic clues and actually work on releasing Sombra, before fans grow completely tired of it all.
Is Sombra finally going to be revealed in "Overwatch" soon? Stay tuned for updates.
