Samsung has released its One UI 6.1.1 update since months ago, which brings with it new changes to its flagships, starting with its Galaxy S24 lineup. But things did not go as smoothly as they did for others.
A major camera bug affects the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and there's another related issue concerning Dolby Atmos audio performance. Almost two months after these issues were brought up, the tech giant finally owns up to the bug and commits that a fix is on the way.
One UI 6.1.1 Update Issues Dolby Atmos Bug
The Dolby Atmos audio feature is one of the killer features for its flagship devices, but this has been reportedly a focus point of many affected users who have experienced a tremendous drop in audio quality, starting after the latest One UI 6.1.1 update, Sam Mobile initially finds.
Some even reported having to disable the Dolby Atmos feature entirely because of poor performance.
It supposedly has been going on since before the beta, with users raising their complaints on Reddit and on Samsung's official community forums. Thus, it would seem that this is not a smartphone-specific issue alone, as even tablets, such as the Galaxy Tab S9, have been documented as affected.
What's Causing Dolby Atmos Bug?
The issue is confirmed by Samsung. According to the company, the cause for this bug is the updated Dolby Atmos Library. The latest that the company released with the deployment of One UI 6.1.1, was the version upgrade from the Dolby Atmos Library from 3.10 to 3.12.
The update note stipulated that it would upgrade the version "to enhance the 360 Audio feature so that it makes sound quality better overall."
As such, while the company endeavored to perfect the feature, it must have unintentionally affected the sound in certain audio modes, hence culminating in the "inferior" performance users have complained about.
Samsung Assures Users That a Fix is in the Works
It's said that owing to complaints that they received, Samsung contacted Dolby, and is working on it together with them. While this is going to be a very positive development, there is no timeline set for when this is going to be fixed.
"We have heard back from our experts! The Dolby Atmos Library has been updated from version 3.10 to 3.12. This update aimed to enhance 360 Audio Capabilities," Samsung acknowledged in a statement.
Nonetheless, users are optimistic this will be addressed in the next December 2024 security update as it wasn't corrected in the November security patch.
Galaxy S23 is the Only Affected Device
This Dolby Atmos bug apparently doesn't only affect the lineup of the Galaxy S23 but also older devices such as the Galaxy S22 and even newer devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 5/Flip 5.
That would, therefore, make it possible that this is some sort of bug caused by the One UI 6.1.1 update itself and not being an issue on the device in particular. At this point, putting a case on the Galaxy Tab S9 makes the theory come to fruition.
What Should Affected Users Do?
Do you experience poor audio performance, or perhaps other related issues since you installed One UI 6.1.1? You are not alone. Until Samsung rolls out a patch, here is what you can try instead.
First, disable Dolby Atmos. Several of the afflicted users discovered that completely turning off Dolby Atmos would fix the problem, although they note that this isn't exactly an ideal solution for an audio enthusiast.
You can also look for firmware updates. Follow up closely on new firmware updates, including the recently scheduled security update in December, which could likely be fixing this issue.
There's also an option to use third-party apps. Although not a permanent solution, use the third-party audio enhancement apps or external speakers by-passing this issue.
