A new report seemed to have put an end to the speculations that there would still be "Penny Dreadful" season 4.

Since summer, amid the announcement that the British-American dark fantasy-horror drama television series has finally ended via its third season, several fans are still hoping that the network would change its mind.

However, in an interview with Showtime programming president Gary Levine at the TCA press tour, the reason behind the end of the series was finally revealed, according to Digital Spy.

He narrated that it was always the plan of writer John Logan to kill off Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), a scene that may no longer warrant the run of "Penny Dreadful" season 4.

"I think we all together came to the idea [of], 'You know what? The series has made bold moves in all different directions," the network executive said. "Let's make a bold move of putting up 'The End' at the end of the final episode and then announcing to the world that it was over.'"

Meanwhile, Showtime CEO David Nevins shared that he tried to convince the writer to go on with the show and still air a fourth season of "Penny Dreadful."

"I was trying to keep open the possibility of going beyond, but as we were going into that final season, it became clear that the combination of that character and John as a writer were the heart of the show, so it seemed like it was going to be foolhardy to continue going," Nevins said.

It can be recalled that in June, the ending of the show was announced.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Logan disclosed, "I realized that's where the third season was going to head. It was going to head to Vanessa sacrificing herself and reuniting with God."
