Showtime announced that the psychological thriller and drama series "Penny Dreadful" had its finale and would not air for season four.
Creator John Logan said, "I realized that's where the third season was going to head," according to Entertainment Weekly.
"It was going to head to Vanessa sacrificing herself and reuniting with God."
The last episode of season three entitled "The Blessed Dark" left fans in question on what was the meaning behind the text "The End" on the screen. To clear the air, it was revealed that along with Eva Green's character Vanessa Ives' sacrificial death will be the last scene for the series.
In addition, Logan has also released a statement about the series' ending. "I created Penny Dreadful to tell the story of a woman grappling with her faith, and with the demons inside her," reported by IGN.
"For me the character of Vanessa Ives is the heart of this series. From the beginning, I imagined her story would unfold over a three-season arc, ending with Vanessa finally and triumphantly finding peace as she returns to her faith," as continued.
Logan also expressed his gratitude to the people who supported until its end.
"To have had fans that have embraced us so passionately has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career. This has been a very personal project for me and I will be forever grateful to have worked with the incredible cast led by Eva, Josh and Tim, our amazing Irish crew, and with our wonderful partners at Showtime and Sky," he added.
Furthermore, TVLine conducted an interview with Logan and Showtime CEO David Nevins where they were asked about the reason behind of the series not having a season four.
"That's when I found out. I always knew this was not going to be a six- or seven-year show, but it was working really well for us," said Nevins as reported by TVLine.
"It was getting richer and deeper with each season. But when John came in to lay out Season 3, he said, 'I think I have to end the season with the death of Vanessa Ives,'" as it continued.
Although "Penny Dreadful" season 4 will not be aired, both the Showtime president and the series creator relayed their respects to the fans that followed 27 episodes all throughout three seasons up to its finale.
Showtime also released a video of the behind-the-scenes happening where the Logan, Hartnett and Green explained the series end.
