Luke Skywalker is anticipated to play a bigger role in "Star Wars" Episode 8.

Unlike in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" wherein the Jedi knight only appeared In less than 10 shots of the film, the latest installment of the space sage promises to put him front and center, according to Cinema Blend.

But the question is: What exactly is Luke Skywalker up to?

Fans would recall that the enigmatic Jedi was a total mystery in the "Force Awakens," as R2-D2, CP3O, Chewbacca, and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) took center stage.

There are strong indications that "Star Wars" Episode 8 will uncover the reasons behind Luke Skywalker's absence in the previous film, as it promises to pick up from where the previous episode left off.

As can be gleaned from the a video clip announcing "Star Wars" episode 8, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) recreate the scene where they finally meet at the end of "The Force Awakens."

It makes a lot of sense to return to this particular moment in light of all the questions that cropped up at the end of episode 7.

However, there is no assurance that "Star Wars" episode 8 will kick off with this scene, as it could also be used as a flashback to highlight Luke Skywalker's major role in the film.

So what exactly are reasons behind Luke's mysterious disappearance?

There are those who speculate that he left because of the guilt in seeing Kylo Ren slaughter all of his students at the Jedi academy based on the visions of Rey.

On the other hand, some theorize that the powerful Jedi left to search for the first Jedi Temple - Skellig Michael.

In the meantime, filming for "Star Wars" Episode 8 has already ended.

According to Melty, director Rhian Johnson and his cast and crew have already finished a major part of the "battle" and have already laid a solid foundation for "Star Wars" Episode 9.

As expected, Mark Hammil will play a bigger role in the movie, while Carrie Fisher has teased Han Solo's funeral.
