SEGA is celebrating the 25th year of our favorite blue spiny speedster "Sonic The Hedgehog" by releasing not just one, but two new games next year.

The Escapist reported that the announcement was made official at the San Diego Comic-Con. SEGA is releasing two types of "Sonic The Hedgehog" games.

One is a 2D-style reminiscent of the classic games in the series. This one's going to be called "Sonic Mania." This represents a re-imagined Zones and Acts from the earlier Sonic games from platforms like SEGA Megadrive, Genesis and even the Sonic CD with Knuckes.

"Sonic Mania was born out of our fans' love of the classic Sonic 2D platform games," Takashi Iizuka, Head of Sonic Team stated.

"This type of collaboration is a first for SEGA and we hope everyone will be both surprised and delighted by this title. Sonic Mania has been a passion project for the entire team and we look forward to sharing more details about it later this year. Having the game actually playable at the event itself tonight was testament to the dedication of the team behind it." he added.

The second Sonic game is called "Project Sonic 2017." It is being developed by the same team who worked on "Sonic Colors" and "Sonic Generations." This will have a more modern-touch presented in full 3D.

The game is said to be slated for Holiday 2017 released and the publishers later teased that more information will be revealed soon enough.

"Today brought thousands of fans together from all over the world to get a look at all the facets of our beloved Sonic the Hedgehog from his foundation in video games to music, TV, mobile, toys, fashion and beyond," Ivo Gerscovich, Chief Brand Officer of Sonic Pillar and SVP of SEGA of America stated.

"This is only the beginning for Sonic and we're happy our fans were here to celebrate this exciting new direction." he further adds.
