Last November 24, the U.S Patent and Trademark Office have just granted Google a new patent for what seems to be the updated version of Google Glass. And from the looks of it, the new version only has one lens. The patent shows that the new device will be made out of flexible material and unlike its predecessor, would be worn around the head over only just one ear. To simply put it, it is now a monocle instead of a pair of glasses.
An abstract from the patent describe it to have a band adjustable so that it can be adjusted to the head of the user near the temple, along the portion of the user's ear adjacent the temple and along the rear position of the user's head.
By the patent's description alone, it could be said that once it is configured, the device will retain its form. Based on the patent, the latest from the tech giant seems to function like its predecessor, Google Glass.
The monocle-looking device, if it pushes through, might also encounter the same problems that Glass had, according to critics. One of which is the privacy concerns raised by some people who also found the product a bit distracting and creepy to use. The tech giant will also have to do a lot more to revive or bring interest to this type of device.
It could be recalled that Google Glass was shelved indefinitely as a consumer product January of this year. Back then, the company said that they needed to pause and reset the development of the said device. Last March, it was reported that Google was looking for new areas of opportunity for Glass but it was the last the public has heard about it since.
There were no clear plans whether there would be software or hardware improvements. The search engine has been silent about it and continued to expand through their other products and services. But with this new patent news, it seems like the tech giant has been doing something and for the moment, it is keeping it a secret.
