Lenovo is one of the big names in the techie world especially in the PC department. But then again like some of its competitors, the find of smartphones are their biggest challenge yet. Because of charges that are related to their latest acquisition of Motorola and their unsold phones that are worth $300 million USD, Lenovo suffered a $714 million USD net loss.
This is reported to be the first time ever that the company experienced net loss in six years. Adding to their troubles is their PC sales, although it could be considered less than what their other competitors experience, their PC sales revenues were seen dropping to 17 percent during the last year.
But despite all those odds Lenovo reportedly said that their overall sales were actually up to $12.2 billion USD compared to last year. And with the changes the company made they expect to save at least $650 million USD this year alone.
The savings though comes with a big price as they are set to cutting off about 3,200 jobs or about 5 percent of their workforce. Lenovo is quoted to have said that for the first time in years, they are now facing their toughest market environment. However, they are still confident that they will be able to surpass it with the help of their $2.91 billion USD purchase of Motorola.
The company also said that proof of their upcoming success is the results of their smartphone sales outside China. The sales they claim have jumped from the 19 percent to 70 percent overall, which if the public will judge would be a huge jump indeed. Lenovo also saw that their total sales in the mobile department increased about 11 percent from the sales last year. Because of these results, Lenovo believes that their mobile department will help stop incurring more loss and at least show profit of about one to two quarters.
Lenovo has acquired Motorola from Google during the 2014, and last year they also acquired IBM's server business for a hefting amount of $2.3 billion USD. The server business has been integrating IBM's x86 servers and clients and thus reported to have their first profit. The company is said to have acquired the business in order to sell cheap services to those local Chinese website owners who are not affected by the slower service from x86 servers.
Lenovo's acquisition of Motorola might be their saving grace yet. It might be the one they needed to integrate into their core business to find a way on regaining market share worldwide.
