The recently-unveiled Microsoft Lumia 640 Windows Phone mid-ranger has already gone up for pre-order in the UK, set to start shipping in early April.

Earlier this week, Microsoft took the stage at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 to unveil its latest devices, introducing two new mid-range Windows Phone handsets: the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL.

The company has decided to focus on affordable smartphones for now, in a bid to boost Lumia sales worldwide. Qualcomm has recently revealed that a Snapdragon 810-powered Lumia flagship is in the cards as well, but the device is not expected until the second half of this year.

For the time being, Microsoft's latest offerings cater to the affordable segment of the smartphone market and the Lumia 640 sounds like a capable budget-friendly handset. The device is set to make its commercial debut in April, but one UK retailer has already started accepting pre-orders.

More specifically, the new Microsoft Lumia 640 is now available for pre-order unlocked and SIM-free from Unlocked Mobiles, sporting a price tag of £149.98. The retailer lists the estimated shipping timeframe as the first week of April.

As a reminder, the Microsoft Lumia 640 features a 5-inch display with an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and packs a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor under the hood. Other specs include 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage capacity, and microSD card support for up to 128GB of additional storage. Unlocked Mobiles also lists the device with 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage space.

The Lumia 640 further sports an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 1-megapixel front shooter, a 2,500 mAh battery, and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 4G LTE connectivity. On the software side, the smartphone ships with Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Denim out of the box, and it's also Windows 10-ready, meaning that it will receive an upgrade to the new OS version when it's ready to roll out.

Microsoft, for its part, announced that its new Lumia 640 should cost around €139 for the 3G model and €159 for the 4G LTE variant.
