Two new Lumia smartphones are now official, as Microsoft just took the wraps off its sub-$100 Lumia 435 and Lumia 532 Windows Phone handsets.
It's no big secret that Microsoft wants to focus on budget-friendly smartphones for the time being, and the company's latest devices prove its commitment in this regards. With sub-$100 price points, the new Lumia 435 and Lumia 532 seem ready to take on Google's Android One.
"When we launched the first Lumia devices over three years ago, we said we were committed to bringing devices to as many people and price points as possible," said Jo Harlow, Microsoft's corporate vice president for phones, in an announcement on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
"With the Lumia 435 and Lumia 532, we've realized our goal of creating the most affordable Lumia devices to date, opening up the opportunity to reach those people who are buying a smartphone for the very first time. Lumia 435 and Lumia 532 deliver competitive hardware alongside innovative software that will continue to receive the very latest updates and enhancements, keeping users up-to-date with the best new features."
The Lumia 435, the first device in Microsoft's new 400 series, comes as the company's cheapest Lumia smartphone to date. The handset will cost just €61, i.e. $81, before taxes and subsidies, and will come in both single- and dual-SIM variants. The Lumia 435 will hit Europe, Asia Pacific, India, the Middle East, and Africa in February, and will come in orange, green, black, and white color options.
In terms of specifications, the Lumia 435 sports a 4-inch WVGA display with a meager resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and packs a 1.2-GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor under the hood. Other specs include 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage capacity, microSD card support for additional memory of up to 128GB, a 2-megapixel rear camera, and a 0.3-megapixel front shooter. A 1,560 mAh battery will power up the handset, while Windows 8.1 with Lumia Denim will handle the software side.
The Lumia 532 is very similar to the Lumia 435 when it comes to hardware specifications, albeit it packs a quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor and a 5-megapixel camera. The smartphone will also be available in both single- and dual-SIM models and will cost €79, i.e. $92, before taxes and subsidies.
