Verizon Wireless has finally started rolling out the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop to its version of the HTC One M8.

Although it's not the latest flagship anymore, the HTC One M8 is still widely considered a sleek and powerful device with lots of top-notch specs and features. Various models of the smartphone have already received Android 5.0 Lollipop for a good while now, but carrier versions typically take longer to get the latest software.

Sprint and T-Mobile were the first carriers in the U.S. to update the HTC One M8 to Android 5.0 Lollipop, and Verizon Wireless is now joining the fray.

"Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce an operating system update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. This version brings Android beyond smartphones and tablets, allowing access to apps and Android services on other connected screens like TVs, cars and wearables. The new material design offers complex animations and 3-D views, 64-bit ABI support and improved runtime," Verizon announced (PDF).

Android 5.0 Lollipop is the last major version of Google's popular mobile operating system and brings a slew of neat features and improvements to the table, including Material Design, a new notifications panel, lock screen notifications, battery life optimizations, and more.

Verizon is rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop to its HTC One M8 over the air (OTA), which means that it may take a few days for the update to reach all devices. If not, rest assured that the update is on its way, but you can always manually check for its availability from your device's Settings menu.

AT&T now the only one of the four major U.S. carriers not to update its HTC One M8 to Android 5.0 Lollipop, and it remains unclear at this point just when it will start rolling out the update.

The newly-unveiled HTC One M9 flagship smartphone, meanwhile, will come with Android 5.0 Lollipop and HTC Sense 7.0 on board out of the box. HTC has yet to announce pricing and availability details for the new-generation One M9.
