The HTC One M8, Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3, and Google Nexus 5 went through some tests to reveal the impact Android 5.0 Lollipop had on their battery performance.

Android 5.0 Lollipop is the last major version of Android and has already reached a number of select devices, including the HTC One M8, the Samsung Galaxy S5, the LG G3, and the Nexus 5, albeit not all variants of the smartphones in all regions got the update.

The latest version of Android brings a number of neat changes and improvements to the table, including in the battery department. Android 5.0 Lollipop is supposed to deliver some additional battery savings due to special optimizations collectively called Project Volta, but things may not be quite as they should. Instead of battery life improvements, in fact, some may see a decline.

Some smartphone users who updated their devices to Android 5.0 Lollipop reported a drop in battery performance compared to the previous version of the OS. GSM Arena ran a series of tests to make things clearer, charting the battery performance of the Snapdragon 801-powered Samsung Galaxy S5, the HTC One M8, the LG G3, and the Nexus 5, before and after the update to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

To determine the changes Android 5.0 Lollipop brought in the battery department, GSM Arena looked at the devices' battery life in standby, talk time, web browsing, and video playback.

In standby, the Samsung Galaxy S6 gained 11 hours of additional battery life, going from 72 hours on KitKat to 83 hours on Lollipop. The HTC One M8 jumped from 71 hours on KitKat to 77 hours on Lollipop, seeing a six-hour boost, while the Nexus 5 and the LG G3 saw a battery performance drop of two hours and six hours, respectively. The Nexus 5 went from the 40 hours on KitKat to 38 hours on Lollipop, while the LG G3 dropped from 69 hours of standby on KitKat to 63 hours on Lollipop.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 saw a battery performance boost when it comes to talk time, gaining six hours from the 21 hours and 20 minutes on KitKat to 27 hours and 37 minutes on Lollipop. The LG G3 didn't see a major change, while the HTC One M8 and the Nexus 5 each saw a massive battery life drop of roughly six hours of talk time.

When it comes to web browsing, the HTC One M8's battery life improved from 9 hours and 6 minutes on KitKat to 12 hours and 29 minutes on Lollipop, while the other three smartphones saw only a minor boost (a few minutes).

Lastly, GSM Arena also looked at the devices' battery performance with video playback, and found the Galaxy S5 to perform roughly the same on Lollipop. The LG G3, HTC One M8, and Nexus 5, meanwhile, each lost about an hour of battery life on Lollipop compared to KitKat.

"The battery life after the update from 4.4 KitKat to 5.0 Lollipop is a mixed bag. The Samsung Galaxy S5 definitely improved, lasting longer in calls and while it's sleeping," GSM Arena concludes.

"The HTC One (M8) got a massive boost in web browsing time, making it one of the best phones in that field. It came at the cost of worse talk time (6 hour will definitely have an impact) and slightly hampered ability to do movie marathons."

"The LG G3 didn't gain anything and the losses were not great either, only the video playback time shrunk. The Nexus 5 matched the biggest losses, 6 hours in the call department and an hour in the video playback."
