It's official: Microsoft will stop manufacturing the Surface 2, its second-generation tablet running the ill-fated Windows RT.

Amid recent rumors that the Windows RT-powered Surface 2 slate was nearing its demise, Microsoft has now officially confirmed plans to drop the tablet and focus more of its efforts on the leading Surface Pro 3.

Microsoft designed Windows RT as a watered-down version of Windows and launched the Surface RT tablet back in 2012 as the first device to run this OS version. The Surface RT, however, saw poor sales and many blamed the Windows RT OS for the tablet's lack of success.

The company did not give up without a fight and launched a new and improved Windows RT-powered tablet called the Surface 2 in 2013, sporting notable improvements on all fronts. The second iteration didn't exactly fly off store shelves either, and Windows RT was again seen as the main reason for the device's poor performance on the market.

Microsoft poured big bucks into its Windows RT endeavors, but the platform never really took off and the company is now ready to cut its losses. Last week, Microsoft confirmed that the Surface 2 would not get an update to the latest Windows 10, and shortly after the announcement all models of the tablet went out of stock on the Microsoft Online Store. That was widely seen as a sign that Microsoft was getting ready to discontinue the tablet, and the company has now confirmed such plans.

After reporting $1.2 billion Surface revenues for the calendar fourth quarter of 2014, Microsoft confirmed to Business Insider (BI) that the Surface Pro 3 drove most of the growth, and that it plans to stop manufacturing the Windows RT-powered Surface 2.

"Microsoft says its latest Surface model, the Surface Pro 3, drove most of the growth. It confirmed on a call with Business Insider that it is no longer manufacturing for sale the less expensive Surface 2," BI reports.

"We are no longer manufacturing Surface 2; however, those still eager to buy Surface should visit Microsoft Retail Stores, MicrosoftStore.com, third-party retailers and resellers for the latest availability," Microsoft also informed The Verge.

The imminent demise of the Surface 2 also heralds the end of the Windows RT platform, albeit Microsoft made no specific mention of this.
