Microsoft announced a Jan. 21 to unveil the consumer preview of its new Windows 10, and a beta build of the OS for mobiles may debut at the same time.
With its latest Windows 10 OS version, Microsoft aims to unify its platforms to make it easier for everyone, bringing great benefits for consumers and developers alike. Ever since the announcement, consumers have been curious regarding the future of Windows Phone, wondering how Windows 10 would fare on their mobile devices.
Signaling an imminent rollout of a Windows 10 beta for mobiles, Microsoft has recently released a Phone Insider app, allowing registered Windows Insider users to get early access to OS updates before they're ready for public consumption. The Phone Insider app in question is available as a free download from the Windows Phone store, aiming to help the company test the preview of Windows 10 for mobile devices and iron out potential kinks before rolling out the final OS version. While a Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 update has been expected for quite some time, Microsoft may skip directly to Windows 10 for mobile devices instead.
Sources close to the matter have now reportedly told The Verge that Microsoft will detail its new Windows 10 version for mobile devices at its upcoming event on Jan. 21, when the consumer preview of Windows 10 should debut.
"Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans tell The Verge that the company will demo a number of features aimed at Windows 10 on phones, including some user interface changes designed to more closely align its mobile operating system with its desktop counterpart and the Xbox One games console," reports the publication.
"Microsoft is also making changes to Windows 10 on the desktop to include light and dark themes that match the phone and tablet editions. Currently referred to as Windows Mobile and Windows 10 Mobile internally at Microsoft, the next mobile OS will be a combination of the Windows Phone and Windows RT operating systems. Microsoft is aiming to take advantage of its universal applications model to align its tablet and phone software to run the same apps across tablets and phones."
According to The Verge, Microsoft will focus more on the consumer features of Windows 10 for both desktop and mobile at its Jan. 21, but provide more details regarding its developer and app plans at the BUILD 2015 conference.
It remains unconfirmed at this point whether Windows 10 Mobile will indeed debut as a beta at Microsoft's event later this month, but we'll get the official scoop straight from the source soon enough. We'll be on top of Microsoft's Jan. 21 event and bring you the latest news as soon as they become available, so stay tuned.
