Finnish company Jolla has taken to crowdsourcing to fund its first tablet running open-source Sailfish OS and hit its target in just over two hours.
The Jolla Tablet is a 7.9-inch slate that runs Sailfish OS, a new platform that will compete against Android and iOS. Jolla has taken to crowdsourcing platform Indiegogo to seek funds for its tablet and managed to hit its $380,000 goal in just over two hours of the campaign's launch, drawing roughly 2,450 backers. In fact, at the time of writing the project has raised $445,893.
The first batch of tablets available at $189 has already sold out, but interested backers can still pledge $199 or $204 in the next tiers, at least at the time of writing. The slates are due to ship to backers in spring 2015.
When it comes to specifications, the Jolla tablet sports a 7.9-inch display with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels at 330 ppi, matching the resolution of the iPad Mini 3, and packs a 64-bit quad-core Intel processor clocked at 1.8GHz under the hood. The slate further features 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage capacity, microSD support for additional memory, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front shooter.
The highlight of the Jolla tablet, however, lies in its software, as the slate runs Sailfish OS - an open operating system based on Linux and developed by Jolla. Sailfish OS is dramatically different from Android and iOS both in terms of visual appearance and of functionality, and puts strong focus on multitasking.
"Jolla Tablet's Sailfish operating system will be unlike anything you've tried before. Once you try it, you'll never want to go back. Independent and open source, change whatever you like, whenever you like," Jolla touts on Indiegogo.
"Multitasking on Sailfish OS shows all your running apps conveniently in one single view. At a glance, you'll see everything that's going on, as well as easily switch between apps. You can also control Sailfish OS apps directly from the multitasking view - for example, change your music or play and pause your video stream without opening the app in full."
Considering that it's not an Android device, the Jolla Tablet will not have access to the Google Play Store. However, the slate is compatible with many Android apps, which are available through third-party app stores.
"Besides running its own native apps, Sailfish OS has the capability to run Android apps. You can continue using your favourite apps like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as downloading all the latest ones via the Jolla Store and other Android app marketplaces. If an app doesn't exist, you can always make it," the company further explains.
Under this Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, the Jolla Tablet is currently available in the U.S., EU, Norway, Switzerland, India, China, Hong Kong, and Russia. If your country is not on the list, you may find additional info in the FAQ at this link.
