The Verizon variant of Motorola's latest flagship smartphone, the new Moto X (2014), is now 50 percent off at just $49.99.

As part of a new promotional sale, Verizon Wireless is now offering the new Moto X for just $49.99, but the deal is only good for this weekend. At the same time, this offer is only available for the Verizon model of the smartphone, as the Moto X Pure Edition and other carrier versions don't sport any discounts at the moment.

As a reminder, the new Moto X (second-generation, 2014) sports a 5.2-inch AMOLED display with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at a pixel density of 424 pixels per inch (ppi), and packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz. Other specs include Adreno 330 graphics, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front shooter. The smartphone further comes with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage capacity, but it has no microSD card slot for additional memory.

On the software side, the handset runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat, but it will get the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop "soon." In terms of design, Motorola added a touch of style with a metal frame, which makes the device look sturdier and more premium at the same time.

In other words, the new Moto X released this year sports notable improvements over its predecessor, the original Moto X, with considerable upgrades on all fronts. As expected, however, the upgraded specs also commend a higher price tag, and the new Moto X costs $500 without a contract. Other carrier versions, meanwhile, start at $99.99. It's worth pointing out that Verizon is also listing the new Moto X with a $99.99 price tag on its website, but the samrtphone for Big Red is $49.99 through Moto Maker.

Carrier subsidies aim to make devices more affordable by allowing customers to pay for the device in time, and Verizon's latest offer is definitely worth considering. If you're looking to buy the new Moto X and wouldn't mind signing a two-year contract agreement with Verizon Wireless, you can now get the smartphone for $49.99, complete with neat customizations. To take advantage of this offer, head over to the Motorola Moto Maker website at this link, where you can also personalize your device.

Keep in mind that this is a limited-time offer available only this weekend, which means that the Verizon Moto X (2014) will return to its normal pricing on Monday, Oct. 20.
