Apple's 2014 full-size iPad is expected to make its official debut this month and come in the color options introduced with the iPhone 5S, including the gold one.

Last year, when it unveiled its new iPhone 5S, Apple added a gold color option that proved to be the most popular among consumers. Gold has become the new must-have for many when it comes to high-end devices, and the company is reportedly planning to launch its next-generation full-size iPads in the same color palette.

Apple is widely expected to unveil its new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 this month, following the September launch of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. As usual ahead of big product announcements, the rumor mill is working overtime trying to anticipate what's to come.

The latest report claiming that this year's full-size iPad will include a gold color option comes from Bloomberg.

"Apple Inc. (AAPL) will add a gold color option for its full-size iPads in an effort to boost a category that's posted declining shipments this year, according to people familiar with the plans," Bloomberg reports.

"New versions of the company's 9.7-inch iPads, anticipated to be unveiled this month, will include gold as a choice of color for the rear metal cover, adding the silver and gray available for the lighter iPad Air, the people said, asking not to be identified ahead of an announcement. That brings the color palette into line with the iPhone 5S, which come with silver and gold backs for models with a white faceplate, and space gray for those with a black front."

The publication further notes that this change aims to boost sluggish sales of the company's tablet line. As the report points out, iPad sales generated $5 billion when the product first launched and boomed to $30 billion in 2012, but declined for the past two quarters. Apple's iPad sales produced $32 billion last year, and the company is now looking for new ways to boost sales.

Apple also made big changes to its iPhone line, finally introducing larger-screen iPhones this year. The iPhone 6 Plus boasts a massive 5.5-inch display and an increasing number of consumers are shifting toward larger smartphones instead of tablets. In this context, it makes even more sense for Apple to try and make its larger iPad more appealing.

It all remains in the rumor state for now, however, so it is advisable to take this report with a grain of salt.
