Apple has apparently pulled its HealthKit-related apps due to an unspecified bug, marring the launch of the much-touted iOS 8.

The health and fitness focused HealthKit is one of the major features of the new iOS 8, and should have had a slew of apps on board when iOS 8 made its formal debut on Wednesday, Sept. 17. As it turns out, however, an unspecified bug has prompted Apple to pull all apps that work with the HealthKit platform from the App Store.

CNET spoke to an Apple representative who did not detail the nature of the bug, but did note that Apple was working on providing a fix within the next two weeks.

"We discovered a bug that prevents us from making HealthKit apps available on iOS 8 today," Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller told CNET in a statement. "We're working quickly to have the bug fixed in a software update and have HealthKit apps available by the end of the month."

Apple unveiled its HealthKit at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) back in June, drawing plenty of interest due to its potential. HealthKit is a platform that aims to collect a range of data on users' health and fitness status and bring them together in a single dashboard, which can be found in Apple's Health app. Users can then send this data off to doctors, if they so prefer, which might make things easier.

It's worth pointing out that HealthKit stores the user's health information in a centralized location that is not accessible without the user's permission, which means that all data should be private and secure. Once the user grants permission, however, doctors can gain access to valuable info regarding a patient's health.

A number of HealthKit-based apps were expected to make their debut on Wednesday, Sept. 17, on iOS 8, but some issues have temporarily halted their launch on the App Store.

The folks over at Cult of Mac also spoke with Brian Mueller, the developer behind weight-loss app Carrot Fit, and learned that Apple pulled the app due to some unspecified bug.

"The rep couldn't clarify what was wrong," Mueller told the publication, "though users of the app who had already downloaded the update were able to use the HealthKit features without any issue."

In conclusion, it remains unclear at this point just what exactly prompted Apple to pull HealthKit-based apps from the App Store at the last minute, or when they will become available again, but a fix should roll out soon. We'll make sure to keep you up to date as soon as more information becomes available, so stay tuned.
