Apple fanboys may have to wait up to a month to get the latest iPhone models, as record demand could result in significant delays.
The new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus made their official debut on Tuesday, Sept. 9, and went up for pre-order on Monday, Sept. 12. It was pretty clear right then that the new iPhones were in great demand, as Apple's website kept crashing and carriers kept pushing back their estimate shipping times.
Apple received plenty of criticism for playing catch-up instead of offering some real innovation with its latest smartphones, but it seems that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are in great demand nonetheless.
The company has now confirmed that it has seen whopping demand for its latest smartphones, with initial pre-orders topping 4 million within the first 24 hours. In fact, the pre-order demand exceeded the company's expectations, as well as initial pre-order supply.
"Apple today announced a record number of first day pre-orders of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the biggest advancements in iPhone history, with over four million in the first 24 hours," the company announced in a press release on Monday, Sept. 15. "Demand for new iPhones exceeds the initial pre-order supply and while a significant amount will be delivered to customers beginning on Friday and throughout September, many iPhone pre-orders are scheduled to be delivered in October."
"Additional supply of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be available to walk-in customers on Friday, September 19 at 8:00 a.m. local time at Apple retail stores. Customers are encouraged to arrive early or order online from the Apple Online Store (www.apple.com) to pickup in-store or receive an estimate delivery date. Both models will also be available on Friday from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, additional carriers and select Apple Authorized Resellers."
In other words, some customers who pre-ordered the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 or the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus will get their new gadgets on Friday, Sept. 19, but other will have to wait until next month. According to Apple's website, estimated shipping times have slipped to three to four weeks for the iPhone 6 Plus, which has seen greater demand.
